Borrowed materials should be returned or renewed by their stated due date. To avoid items becoming overdue, borrowers must renew outstanding items online through their library accounts. Borrowers may renew items up to three times, but this is not done automatically. Once an item has met its renewal limit it must be returned to the library. The libraries do not assess fees unless materials are overdue more than 40 days and considered lost.
For any questions or concerns regarding material returns, e-mail GW Libraries' Access Services team.
Can I return my checked-out items to Gelman Library?
Yes. The library book drop is open 24/7, and you may use it to return your library materials at any time. When facing the building, the book drop is located to the far right of the revolving doors.
I would like to return my checked-out items, but I am unable to get to campus. How do I get them back to you?
You can mail them to:
The George Washington University Gelman Library
Attn: Access Services Department
2130 H St. NW
Washington, DC 20052
Please pack your books securely in a bubble mailer or sturdy box to avoid damage and shifting during transit. We strongly suggest that you use a trackable mailing method such as USPS, UPS or FedEx. Please note that you are responsible for library materials until they are received by a staff member.
May I also return other libraries' materials?
Yes. You may mail or directly return all items currently checked out to your library account to Gelman Library. We will remove the items from your account and send them back to the appropriate library. Interlibrary loan items with blue sleeves on the covers must be returned at Gelman Library only; however, consortial items may be returned at other consortium member libraries.
I’m graduating or not returning to campus. If I return my items, how can I be sure they are no longer on my account?
We wish you all the best in the future! You will no longer have access to your library account, so please e-mail the GW Libraries' Access Services team so we can verify for you if your items have been received and removed from your record.
