First Day of Class - Ideas

With hundreds of tips and ideas, First Day(s) of Class is a website created by the Center for Research in Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan. No matter what the teaching approach, there is something on the site for every style.

Many faculty recognize that some students use better study strategies than others. Prof. Stephen Chew, a psychologist at Samford University, has written a brief article describing on how to use a little class time to give students a memorable lesson in how to study. (http://go.gwu.edu/chew). Watch the same set of ideas as a series of 5 minute You Tube videos, click here to see the first one, which has attracted almost half a million viewers so far. Without gimmicks or panaceas, these are ideas that any faculty member will see as common sense approaches.

Finally, to get students motivated for a learner-centered approach to teaching, consider some of the tips provided in First-Day Questions for the Learner-Centered Classroom.
