Programs and Services
The University Teaching & Learning Center offers a variety of services for faculty. Our programs range from e-teaching workshops to instructional consultations.
In an intensive “bootcamp” style program, faculty participants are guided through a course (re)design process in a supported, facilitated environment to imagine, or re-imagine a course. Participants walk away with new ideas for active learning, a nearly completed welcoming syllabus, and a cohort of faculty collaborators. Applications are required for this popular program held in late May.
Participants are part of a cohort of early career faculty who attend period workshops over the course of the year covering a variety of topics related to teaching, such as structuring a class period, assignments design, leading class discussions, and so forth. Members also participate in an iterative peer review process aimed at pinpointing areas for potential growth. Faculty are encouraged to think of their teaching as a part of their scholarly endeavors, to experiment in their classrooms, and to engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).
The UTLC facilitates an online course which teaches faculty about online course design and delivery. In addition to housing lots of curated resources on best practices for teaching online, the OFD course gives faculty a taste of the experience of being a student online. It includes quizzes, assignments, and discussion boards. The course is self-paced and available to all instructors of record under the "Special Use" heading on your "My Blackboard" page.
Feedback and Classroom Visits
We offer several avenues for helping GW instructors get feedback on their teaching: small group analyses and classroom visits. In doing so, we protect the confidentiality of all conversations and consider our feedback as formative and not evaluative in nature.
The UTLC provides consultations on teaching methods, course design and development, instructional tools, and more. To request a consultation, please click on "Teaching & Course Design Consultations" (above) and complete the consultation request form.
UTLC sponsors a variety of teaching related workshops and events throughout the year. These are described in detail on our News & Events page. They include an annual Teaching Day in October, a Guest Workshop Series, and UTLC Faculty-led Workshops.
