Online Faculty Development

The Online Faculty Development course is a self-paced professional development course designed to introduce faculty to best practices for teaching online.  It is available in Blackboard to all GW instructors of record. You will find it listed under "Special Use" on your "My Blackboard" page.

A goal of the course is to give you some of the experience of taking an online course in Blackboard, while also providing a wealth of curated resources covering all aspects of online teaching. So, within the course you will find links, readings, and videos, but also quizzes, assignments, and discussion boards. The quizzes are self-grading and provide immediate feedback. Should you decide to try any of the activities, you will receive feedback from a University Teaching & Learning Center (UTLC) consultant.

Topics covered include:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Online Teaching
  • Module 2: Course Design and Assessment
  • Module 3: Assignments and Activities
  • Module 4: Discussion and Engagement
  • Module 5: Feedback and Grading
  • Module 6: Media and Content

Also included in the course is a list of recommended readings and resources, as well as the UTLC's Checklist for Online Course Delivery, a step by step guide for delivering your online course.

Always check with your department about specific requirements for online teaching.
