Mount Vernon Seminary and College
The University Archives preserves and upholds the legacy of Mount Vernon Seminary and College, an all-women’s educational institution founded in 1875 and absorbed by the George Washington University in 1999. As the first school of higher education available to women in Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon Seminary and College have an important place in this city’s heritage, in higher education, and in American women’s history.
The University Archives is proud to care for more than 500 linear feet of material documenting the rich history of this illustrious institution, including a collection of publications available in our reading room. From the personal papers of notable women such as Marjorie Merriweather Post and Eleanor Lansing Dulles, to the records produced by students, faculty and staff over 124 years, the Mount Vernon Seminary and College Archives sustains the memories of its graduates and serves as an abundant resource for future scholars.
