Remote Library Services and Resources for Virtual Learning
Remote library resources remain available to all students, faculty, and staff to maintain research activities and support online classes during GW's virtual learning period.
When away from campus, you can access library materials through single sign-on. To avoid multiple log-ins, consider using the GW VPN.
For updates and more information on how COVID-19 is impacting university services, please check the Campus Advisories webpage, which is being updated frequently.
Gelman, Eckles and VSTC Library Buildings
The Gelman, Eckles, and VSTC Library buildings are closed, but remote library resources remain available to all students, faculty, and staff.
Remote assistance for technical and basic information is available by calling the Ask Us Desk at 202-994-6048 or by chat. You can also submit questions through our webform or by emailing AskUs@gwu.edu. Messages will be answered within one business day.
If you need more in-depth assistance, please make an appointment for a remote research consultation with a librarian for a consultation. If the available times don't work for you, email the Ask Us Desk at AskUs@gwu.edu and we'll contact you.
Find and Access Materials
The GW Libraries are attempting to maintaining access to course reserves, including Top Textbooks, and some digitized print materials. Sharing of print materials held at Gelman Library is currently availalble to the GW community by mail. See: instructions for requesting print materials. Digitization of print materials may be available with longer turn-around times. This is dependent on the safety for staff to work in the building.

Access to Print Materials from Outside GW (including WRLC)
Sharing of print materials through consortium loan request has been suspended until further notice. Digitization of print materials is limited to a small number of libraries remaining staffed. Every effort will be made to obtain resources requested through the library catalog.
Freely-Available Digitized Print Materials
The National Emergency Library is a lending library of 1.4 million books created by the Internet Archive to serve the nation’s displaced learners. After June 16, books in the National Emergency Library are available to one borrower at a time using controlled digital lending.
Top Textbooks and Course Reserves
Top Textbooks and hard copy reserve readings assigned during the virtual instruction period are available via Blackboard. If you are a faculty member and need to request assigned readings be added to Blackboard, please contact email@example.com for assistance. Students, if you have required reading assignments due for spring semester that are not on Blackboard, please contact your instructor.
Returning Library Materials and Overdue Materials
The due date on all borrowed materials will be automatically renewed until students return to campus. While it is important that materials be returned to the libraries, we understand these are unprecedented circumstances and will work with the GW community with respect to individual situations.
If you are located in the area and wish to return your checked out items to the library, the Gelman book drop is open 24/7, and you may use it to return your library materials at any time. When facing the building, the book drop is located to the far right of the revolving doors. Please remember to wear the recommended face covering and practice safe physical distancing while on campus. You can also mail materials to:
The George Washington University Gelman Library
Attn: Access Services Department
2130 H St. NW
Washington, DC 20052
Please pack your books securely in a bubble mailer or sturdy box to avoid damage and shifting during transit. We strongly suggest that you use a trackable mailing method such as USPS, UPS or FedEx. Please note that you are responsible for library materials until they are received by a staff member.
If you will be returning to campus this fall, you may return the materials when you get back to campus. Materials will continue to be automatically renewed through the summer and will not be declared lost or incur any fines.
