ORCID is an independent non-profit organization that provides a persistent identifier – an ORCID iD – that distinguishes you from other researchers and a mechanism for linking your research outputs and activities to your iD. ORCID is integrated into many systems used by publishers, funders, institutions, and other research-related services.

Why ORCID?
- Enables you to distinguish yourself from others with similar names.
- Link all of your research output with your name, even as you change affiliations (or your name) over time.
- Easily update your research profile by using ORCID to retrieve information on all of your scholarly works.
- ORCIDs are increasingly required by publishers, funders and research organizations when applying for grants or submitting manuscripts for publication.
- Autopopulate grant application forms such as SciENcv and NIH Biosketch.
- Unlike many other research IDs, ORCID is not tied to a specific publisher, institution or database. You can take your profile with you throughout your career.
Please review the ORCID Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
Connecting Your ORCID to GW
By connecting your ORCID to GW, you can control how GW interacts with your ORCID profile. GW offers you the option to make GW a trusted organization. Below is information on what it means to designate GW as a trusted organization.
Reading Information
GW can read information on your ORCID profile that you have restricted to trusted partners, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of research activities across the university. You retain the ability to make specific parts of your profile completely private, ensuring that GW (and others) cannot access this information.
Writing Information
GW may write information to your ORCID profile, but only with your consent. Examples of information GW may write include publications or conference presentations and awards granted by GW. This functionality is designed to reduce the number of places you need to enter your information and keep your ORCID profile up to date. You control the visibility of all elements of your profile, including information added by GW.
Storing Information
GW may store information retrieved from your ORCID profile in the GW data warehouse. Any use of this information will be governed by data use agreements and handled in accordance with university policies. Libraries and Academic Innovation will email all registered users should GW’s use of this information change.
