Brief Early History of the NEA Archive

In 1922, the Research Division of the National Education Association was founded to serve as a clearinghouse for research activities, and was responsible for gathering information and formulating reports about current and future problems in education.  Over time, this division developed a diverse collection of reports, publications and scholarly literature. In the late 1960s, the NEA hired an archivist to manage the growing collection of historic records. As conversations began in 2010 between GW and the NEA it was clear that as the home of the IBT Labor History Research Center, the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) was a smart home for the Archive of the nation’s largest labor union. The SCRC is proud to preserve and make available these important records of the NEA. A timeline covering significant events in NEA history provides historic context for the archival materials housed at GW.
