Dialogue Across Differences in the Classroom

Research shows that students who discuss controversial issues or even just learn about opposing views are more likely to recognize and appreciate ideological diversity. But who decides what makes an issue controversial, and how can we successfully facilitate these conversations? We will discuss how to choose appropriate topics, frame productive and authentic questions, facilitate engaging discussions, and make pedagogical choices like whether to reveal your own views. Throughout, we'll highlight how building these skills in class conversations supports students’ development as democratic citizens.
