Emergency Alert Banner

This is for our admins responsible for posting emergency alerts to the website.

Creating an Alert Message

  1. Log in to library.gwu.edu/user
  2. Click Add Content in the top right
  3. Select Emergency Alert Banner from the list
  4. Add a Title (this is only for internal use and is not displayed on the website) (we recommend a useful short title like 'Gelman Closed 2-14-2014')
  5. Add the Emergency Alert Message. This is text only and cannot handle HTML. Note: "NOTICE: " is automatically inserted at the beginning of your text.
  6. Click Save at the bottom of the page
  7. Check your Message by opening a different browser and ensuring your message is displaying as intended

Removing the Alert Message

  1. Log in to library.gwu.edu/user
  2. Click Content on the top of the page. The message will be listed near the top of the list of content by its title.
  3. Click the blue edit link on the right side of that row.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Publishing options. Uncheck the Published box.
  5. Click Save at the bottom of the page.
  6. Open a different browser and load the Library site to make sure the alert banner is no longer displaying

Message Content

The message is text only. The textbox does not accept images, styling, or links. The message will appear on all pages of the Libraries website, including Eckles and Virginia, so make sure any campus specific information is made clear (e.g. "Gelman Library will be closed").

An example closure message:
"Gelman is closed for the night. Due to the current winter weather forecast, classes, events and activities at GW were cancelled for Tuesday, January 21, 2014. However, Gelman remained open! We kept the building open until 8pm tonight, but now are closed. Please revisit this website for an update on tomorrow's hours."

Scheduling (Setting Time/Date for an Alert to be Live)

You can use the Scheduling options at the bottom of the page to set a time/date for an alert to go live (published) and stop showing (unpublished). Note that the site runs an update every three hours and will update scheduled items at that point, which could be up to three hours after the time you set.
