Father Edward Kelly Dangwai-Opposition Journals

This collection of Taiwan opposition (tang-wai) journals is dedicated to the memory of Father Edward Kelly, a supporter of Taiwan democracy who played a key role in the collection and preservation of these journals.

A native of Ireland, Father Kelly was a Catholic priest attached to the Missionary Society of St. Columban.  After receiving a Ph.D. in Chinese studies from Columbia University, Father Kelly was assigned to Hong Kong in the 1970s.  There he developed an interest in the democracy movement on Taiwan.  In the 1980s he initiated an effort to collect tang-wai magazines and journals from Taiwan, in collaboration with Dr. Gerrit van der Wees and his wife Mei-chin of the Taiwan Communique, Dr. James Seymour of Columbia University, and Dr. Fu-mei Chang of the Hoover Institute.  The tang-wai journals held by the Gelman Library are the result of these efforts.
