Data Consultant
Please review the following information before submitting an application to the data consultant position.
Position Details
- Graduate students only.
- Qualified candidates must have a strong background in statistics.
- Pay rate will be $25 her hour.
- Work 6-8 hours per week beginning in fall 2026.
- Choose your schedule during Academic Commons Operating Hours: Sunday 12pm-8pm, Monday-Thursday 10am-8pm, Friday 10am-5pm.
Application Details
This position typically receives a high volume of applications. To compose an application that stands out, consider the following guidance:
- Emphasize your graduate-level experience, especially coursework or projects in statistics and data analysis.
- Demonstrate your proficiency in R and Python, and mention any other data tools like SAS, SPSS, or Excel if you have used them.
- Provide concrete examples of quantitative data analysis projects you have worked on, explaining the methods you used.
- Be sure to include experiences where you have taught, tutored, or mentored others in data analysis or statistics.
- Highlight your ability to explain complex concepts clearly and concisely, especially in relation to data and statistics.

Peer Tutor
Peer tutors actively participate in a comprehensive training that prepares them to become effective peer educators. They create their own work schedules within the Academic Commons operating hours and work with students in one-on-one and small group settings in Gelman Library. Tutors draw on their own experience and implement research-based techniques illustrated in training in order to help support students in their academic coursework. They also contribute to a variety of Academic Commons community building, outreach, and marketing projects.
Working as a peer tutor has a number of benefits, such as:
- Earning certification through the College Reading and Learning Association certified tutor training program.
- Gaining a deeper understanding of course content.
- Learning, practicing and refining valuable communication, critical thinking and study skills as well as honing leadership and collaboration skills.

Peer Navigator
Peer navigators help students, faculty, staff, and other members of the GW community navigate the library and connect with resources with a high level of customer service. Additionally, peer navigators provide assistance to library patrons looking to utilize the Create Digital Studio.

- Developing and enhancing customer service skills.
- Demonstrating and refining collaboration and communication skills.

Student Support Specialist
Student support specialists are graduate student employees who assist with the oversight of all Academic Commons programs, including peer tutoring programs, data consultations, workshops, and the Ask Us Desk. Student Support Specialists will specialize in one or two programs in collaboration with the Academic Commons Leadership Team, but will be responsible for providing general support to all programs.

- Demonstrating problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Learning to work as part of a team dedicated to supporting students and the GW community.

Please note: only graduate student employees (active or incoming) will be reviewed for the Student Support Specialist position.
Learning Assistant (LA)
Undergraduate Learning Assistants (ULAs) provide embedded course support and weekly course reviews/drop-in study sessions for students enrolled in target courses. While ULAs are hired in various departments throughout the university, Academic Commons partners with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Economics to recruit, hire, and select qualified applicants.

- Learning, practicing and refining valuable communication, critical thinking and study skills as well as honing leadership and collaboration skills.
