Closed

The Gelman Library building is closed for a significant HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system maintenance project. Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library remains available for students and faculty of SMHS, GWSPH, and SON. For faculty and for students enrolled in summer courses at other GW schools, the Burns Law Library is available through August 10, 2026.

What is Penji?

Penji serves as a central resource on campus for students to connect with academic support resources. Academic Commons partners with several other resources on campus to offer students a user-friendly and accessible way to access tutoring and other academic support programs. Penji can be accessed using a web browser or through an app (available on iOS or Android). 

Communities in Penji

Penji is organized by different "Communities" representing different resources. When you first log-in, you will have the opportunity to join one or more of these communities. Once you have joined one, you will have the ability to navigate between all of the communities available to you.

Academic Commons Peer Tutoring

Get one-on-one support in a variety of courses across the curriculum from fellow undergraduate students who’ve been where you are. Academic Commons tutoring is available for select classes and can be scheduled easily through Penji. Many students find that working with a tutor helps boost both their confidence and academic performance.

Learning Assistant Review Sessions & Office Hours

Join group-based review sessions and office hours for select courses, led by trained Learning Assistants who’ve successfully completed the class. These sessions are a great way to reinforce course material, ask questions, and stay on track throughout the semester.

Data Consulting

Whether you're designing a research project, analyzing data, or creating visualizations, our data consultants are here to help. Meet one-on-one with a trained graduate or doctoral student to get support at any stage of your data analysis process. Appointments are available through Penji.

Student Success Coaching

Offered to undergraduate students, this program provides one-on-one coaching focused on motivation, study skills, and other strategies for academic success. Sessions can be scheduled through Penji to help you build the tools you need to thrive in college.

GW Writing Center

Serving both students and faculty, the Writing Center offers one-on-one consultations to help you develop your writing skills. Their conversation-based approach guides you to become a stronger writer and editor of your own work. Appointments can be scheduled through Penji.

Athletics Tutoring and Advising

This appointment-based tutoring program is available exclusively to undergraduate student-athletes. It offers academic support tailored to your course needs and can be scheduled easily through Penji. Make the most of this resource to stay on track both in the classroom and on the field.

Sometimes functionality may be different between communities. Some communities, like the Academic Commons Peer Tutoring community, offer one-on-one appointments, while others, like the LA Review Sessions & Office Hours community, offer group sessions. Other communities may have specific rules or guidelines within their programs as well. Always make sure to check the respective program's website to make sure you are up-to-date.

Is it your first time using Penji? Or do you need a refresher? Check out the following videos for guidance on common tasks. The videos are all recorded from the web browser view, but they will be very similar to what you will see on the app.
