Tips for Referring Students to Academic Commons
At Academic Commons, we believe that academic support benefits students at all levels rather than only those who are struggling. Whether a student wants to deepen their understanding, build confidence, or maintain strong performance, our peer-led tutoring, review sessions, and academic resources are here to help.
How Students Can Access Support
- Review sessions are open to all students and do not require an appointment. Signing up in advance is recommended, though, so that students can get updates about location or time changes.
- Tutoring and data consultations can be booked anytime through our platform, Penji, but we encourage early sign-up for best availability.
- Students can also visit the Ask Us Desk in Gelman Library or explore our offerings directly on the Academic Commons website.
General Strategies for Faculty and Staff
- Include referral info in your syllabus or course site, so students see support options from day one (sample syllabus language listed below).
- Send reminders around key times like midterms or before major projects via email or announcements.
- Encourage student clubs and organizations to invite us for study skills workshops.
Approaching Individual Students
When referring a student directly, it’s important to be encouraging and positive. Show that you believe in their potential and frame support as a normal and proactive step—rather than something only for those “behind.”
Addressing Barriers
- Stigma: Emphasize that tutoring is for everyone, not just those who are struggling. Many successful students use academic support to excel even further.
- Confusion: Clearly explain how to access services and what students can expect from a tutoring or review session.
Sample Language for Conversations or Emails
- “I wanted to let you know about some great academic resources on campus that many students find helpful, including peer tutoring and review sessions. It’s a fantastic way to get extra support or deepen your understanding of the material.”
- “You’re doing well, and I think connecting with a tutor could help you stay on top of the material and prepare for upcoming exams. I can help you get started if you want.”
- “Many students find our review sessions really helpful to prepare for midterms. You don’t need to sign up, but it’s a good idea to reserve your spot early through Penji.”
