GWU Medical Faculty
Requirement for Checking Out Books
Your GWorld card is your library card and is required to check out books. After you get your GWorld card, stop by the Check Out desk to make sure your library record is active.
Types of Material That Can be Borrowed
- General GW Circulating Collection and Reserves
- Media Resources Materials
- Materials at WRLC Off-Site Storage Facility
Periodicals may be used in the library only.
No Limit (except 25 book limit from George Mason).
Medical faculty members may borrow regular circulating materials for up to 4 months. There are 3 fixed due dates per year.
For Books Checked Out or Renewed Between These Dates:
The Due Date Is:
|August 19 - December 19||January 31|
|December 20 - April 18||May 31|
|April 19 - August 18||September 30|
If a book you have checked out is needed by another person, it may be recalled. All books are subject to recall after they have been charged out for at least 14 days. You will be notified by e-mail or phone and will have 14 days from the date of recall to return the book before recall fines are assessed. See details and request form.
Medical faculty members may renew all GW and WRLC books 3 times, and these renewals can begin 3 weeks before the end-of-semester due dates (see chart under "Loan Period"). All books may be renewed a variety of ways, including online, email, and phone. Click here for details.
If you reach the renewal limit of 3, you must bring the books in person to the Check Out Desk to return or renew; if you still need the books, we will start over the process for you, allowing up to 3 more automatic renewals.
Overdue Fines and Other Fees
$.25 per day per book up to $10 maximum. After 40 days, overdue items are considered lost and you will be charged $107 for each book. See details.
Periodicals Borrowing Policy
Faculty may borrow periodicals for one day. Fines are assessed for overdue periodicals. Periodicals must be checked out from and returned to the check out desk.
Other Library Privileges
GW Medical faculty are eligible for the following library services:
- Consortium Loan Service borrowing
- Direct borrowing at WRLC libraries
- Remote access to databases
- GW Libraries Computers: Now Require a Login
Please note: Medical faculty are ineligible for requesting materials from the Gelman Library System's Interlibrary Loan Service. Medical faculty should contact Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library for ILL services.
Faculty Authorized Borrower Cards
Faculty members may authorize designated individuals to charge out library materials on their behalf through the use of Faculty Authorized Borrower (FAB) cards. A faculty member may request up to three FAB cards by completing a form available at the Gelman Library Check Out Desk. Materials will appear on the faculty member's library account, and faculty members are responsible for materials charged out by their faculty-authorized borrowers.
GW Faculty are eligible for library borrowing privileges in the Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program (RFBP). This is a program of the Research Libraries Advisory Committee to OCLC that allows faculty members of participating institutions borrowing privileges and on-site access to the collections of some of the most important research libraries in North America.
Prior to visiting an OCLC member institution, faculty members need to apply for an RFBP card at the Gelman Library Check Out Desk. Upon presentation of his or her valid GW photo ID, the faculty member will then be issued the requisite borrower's card.
Borrowing Privileges for Faculty Spouses
Spouses of faculty members may apply for borrowing privileges at the Check Out Desk. A letter or a personal introduction from the faculty member who is requesting borrowing privileges for a spouse is sufficient basis for issuing a library card. Borrowing privileges are the same as those of a Sponsored Researcher (fee not applicable).
Borrowing Privileges for Faculty Emeriti
Faculty emeriti are entitled to borrowing privileges at the Gelman Library. A validated GW ID issued from the Personnel Office is generally sufficient basis for borrowing items from the GW general circulating collection, though we reserve the right to verify status through other university sources. Borrowing privileges are the same as those of current faculty members.
