"A Splendid Wake" Celebrates the Work of DC Poets
Washington's rich tradition of poetry was celebrated by a standing room only crowd in the Special Collections Research Center on September 25. The event “A Splendid Wake” honored the poets of the past who have left us, and unveiled a newly created online site to help document and preserve the remarkable literary history of Washington poets from 1900 through the present.
The program brought together 15 well-known local poets and academics to discuss their experiences living and creating within this vibrant and enduring community. The enthusiastic crowd included many poets who run local reading series, local small press publishers, a professor at Montgomery College who brought six of her students, the composer Janet Peachey who teaches at the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, DC Council member Jim Graham, and students of local universities.
