SCRC Adds Rare Maps and Scientific Diagrams to Collections
Known as An atlas to Walker's Geography and gazetteer and donated by GW graduate and noted education policy leader Samuel Halperin, these sixteen plates document current knowledge of geography circa 1797. They include maps by region of areas including Europe, Asia, and South America, as well as individual countries such as Switzerland, Italy, and the Netherlands.
The scientific diagrams illustrate in fascinating artistic detail scientific principles of optics and mechanics, and also depict knowledge of the natural world including the solar system and botany. These images are available in original paper form in only a few libraries in the world, and seldom in as complete a set as the one held here at the SCRC. We hope you’ll visit to view these marvelous documents!
